The Bone Shakers - The Book Of Spells

The truth is that I've been trying to get people to give this album a shot for years and I have to sheepishly admit I've had VERY few takers. The vocal prowess of Sweet Pea Atkinson alone should be enough to sell this baby if you ask me. The guitar fireworks of Randy Jacobs are well worth a listen and the production, bass and general influence of Dave Was should count for some points too. I think the songs are smart and tight, the lyrics well above average --- the cover of Latimore's 'Let's Straighten It Out' is the best cover of that song out there. I have always found this album musically appealing since my dear friend Alan first introduced me to it back in our Winterland days.

I'd add the AllMusic review but...yeah, he wasn't particularly impressed either. Maybe someone else will dig it THIS time.....

I know about these guys via Was(Not Was) and many other guest appearances ...but I missed this beauty ! Right up my street ...I've already ordered a cd copy !
Punchy soulful funk with a rock influence and enough rawness and grit to keep me interested - Thanks for the intro KC ...it's a real gem !
Cheers

Well. I dig it. Great combo of rock and R&B, fantastic band. I particularly like the 'Cold Sweat' cover (obvious choice, I know). I hope this will encourage some more people to check it out.

Great choice - I checked and the links are all expired - sorry I didn't check out the Cult earlier!!!. Around 10 years or so - they played The North Star Bar in Philadelphia - to maybe 100 people if that - I became aware of their band and singers, as did many, via Was Not Was - and saw them when they also came through Philadelphia on a rare tour - has to be at least 5 or 6 years ago. Album well worth listening to - and many thanks to The King
I feel better now - better than James Brown - How Do You Feel??
