Albert Lee - Hiding & Albert Lee

"British guitarist Albert Lee has been delighting music fanatics with his virtuoso playing and astonishing technique for more than 30 years. Having backed the likes of Joe Cocker, Emmylou Harris, Eric Clapton and The Everly Brothers, his reputation as a sideman par excellence is beyond reproach. He continues to tour with his own band Hogan's Heroes as well as Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. With the intention of focusing on his lesser-known solo career, Raven has brought together two fine Lee albums on the one CD for the first time. Produced by Brian Ahern, his 1979 debut, Hiding, showcases his consummate country/rockabilly picking styles, while 1982's Albert Lee (produced by Rodney Crowell) displays a more rock-oriented edge. With instrumental and vocal backing provided by Emmylou Harris, Emory Gordy, Hank Devito, Buddy Emmons, Vince Gill, Billy Payne and others, these dynamic and playful recordings are essential listening for guitar and country-roots music aficionados alike." I'm not a big country fan but back in 1979 I was played 'Hiding' by Albert Lee by a pal, and really enjoyed his guitar chops and vocals, as well as some good songs and fellow assisting musicians (see booklet for full details). I had the original vinyl and the first track 'Country Boy' just blew me away...a guitar masterclass - Here is the CD version paired with 'Albert Lee' from 1982.

His name popped into my head automatically on reading the remnants of your conversation with KC about UK guitarists and de blooz.

After his stint with Chris Farlowe's Thunderbirds but before Head Hands and Feet, he seemed to be one of the guys on call for several units playing the Flamingo on Wardour Street. The Flamingo being a cool and groovy place to be over the weekend, I saw him often. Out of all the plectrists who played there - Eric Clapton, Peter Greene, Dave Cliff, even John McLaughlin...... little Albert excited me the most. Looked like a refugee from an insurance office with serviceable dark suit and tie and nonentious spectacles. Few appeared to notice how good he really was. But he always loved country. Country was what he wanted to play all the time. Strange to think back on it that those of us in the know would call the club the Flaming "O", like we were heading out on the range in the west-end. And there was Albert dreaming of country.

Last thing I had with him on it was some Emmilou Harris.
But he was a fabulous blues player.

It's a pleasure Lazz....My AL moments..... He came into a pub my mate was playing in to guest with the band .... We chatted after ( BTW he was awesome!) and he was a cool laid-back dude....Many moons passed...I saw him with Bill Wyman's mob ....Invited by Eddie Floyd (also in the band then ..hes a friend)..and backstage I shook his hand and told him I liked the new CD release I had bought (of this very disc) and he was just as friendly ...
I was too young to catch The Flamingo days but my singer/great friend Earl used to more-or-less live there in the day ...and sang... Georgie Fame was a big favourite there too !
