Baden Powell - A Vontade (1964-mono)

I heave this one over from "The Leftovers" to here, because i think it's such a nice album that it belongs here too. Bought it some time ago, and really would like to hear more of him...Anybody has some?

As part of Soul Jazz’s recent glut of Brazilian reissues, comes this 1964 gem by Baden Powell – not the founder of the Scout movement, we hasten to add, but a guitarist and composer who pioneered the “afro-bossa” sound. Smooth as you like but giddily psychedelic with it.
Baden Powell was the guitar genius who helped shape bossa nova’s sound, bringing a new level of artistry to his instrument while cementing its place at the rhythmic heart of the genre. On this CD, his third solo effort and first for the legendary Elenco label, a new set of innovations were set to further radicalise bossa’s sonic vocabulary.
Decamping to Bahia in north east Brazil, Powell studied the Afro-Brazilian traditions of Candomblé, Umbanda and Capoeira, seeking ways to combine their complex, heavyweight rhythms with his rarefied classical guitar work. The resulting set of recordings make for a stark, minimal, yet beautiful melding of styles brought to life by a superlative set of compositions written alongside fellow visionary Vinicius de Moraes.
Berimbau, named after the Afro-Brazilian percussive bow, features Powell’s guitar aping the rhythms of the instrument before a sunny chorus takes the song back to Rio, while Sorongaio has intricate guitar work set in bewitching interplay against rolling African drums. Consolação, would become a bossa standard, and is given its first airing here in its most naked form: an instrumental with complex guitar playing the irrepressible tune around brushed afro percussion. Like the album itself, it’s a perfect example of bold invention backed by irresistible melodies.

Baden Powell de Aquino was a monster and a master. He made many recordings in a long career. I have a small handful. As well as "A Vontade", "Os Afro Sambas de Baden e Vinicius" is pretty significant, the "Baden Powell Quartet" collection is smokin', there is "Rare and Unreleased" collection which makes me feel quite special to have, and the 2 CDs of "O Universo Musical de Baden Powell" assemble tracks from his years with Barclay and with Festival in France. Another of Brasil's monumental musos named Mario Adnet - who had also organised film and concert and recording tributes for overlooked maestro, Moacir Santos - worked with Baden Powell's son, pianist Philippe Baden Powell, on pulling together a bunch of B-P compositions played by a hot band and titled "AfroSambaJazz". I'll organise some of the stuff for sharing.
