Various Artists - Big Noise : A Mambo Inn Compilation

Ah, the art of the compilation. Most music lovers can recognise a great compilation when they hear it but putting one together is a different matter - I should know, as I’m struggling to put together the Sound Of The City : London comp. A great compilation requires a considered mix of styles as well as perfect sequencing to maintain the interest of the listener right through to the end. This particular album ticks all the boxes. Put together by Gerry Lyseight, it is inspired by nights spent at London’s Mambo Inn during the 80s and 90s. The Mambo Inn was described as ‘the latin, African and jazz club’ and this pretty much sums up the tracks here. From Khaled to Airto, from Kanda Bongo Man to Jimmy McGriff, this NEVER lets up.

  1. DJ Food - Dub Lion  (Remake)
  2. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Kinna Sonha (Remix)
  3. Khaled - Didi
  4. Sweet Talks - Angelina
  5. Kanda Bongo Man - Zing Zong
  6. Tchando - Ussak Ndja
  7. Mambomania - Mango Mango Mangue
  8. Andy Montanez - El Swing
  9. Libre - Elena Elena
  10. Airto - Samba De Flora
  11. Young Holt Trio - Wack Wack
  12. Ramsey Lewis - Do What You Wanna
  13. Jimmy McGriff - You’re The One
  14. Luther Barnes & The Red Budd Gospel Choir - My God Can Do Anything

Living at the Irrelevant and Castle meant that I was able to wobble home on foot from Brixton's Mambo Inn.
Your good man Joe Boyd hisself gave me my copy of this collection on the pavement outside, one late-night/early-morning.
But it's long lost and gone on the subsequent journeys. An excellent package. Very pleased to have it again. Thanks, J.J.
The first two tracks, as I recall, were particularly brilliant - but shamelessly marred by a couple of odd musical choices in the mixing.
There are some occasional inept keyboard voicings in the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan piece which felt ignorant and unforgiveable to me.
I wonder if it will cause me the same discomfort this time around.

Good to hear you have accepted the poison chalice of attempting a London compilation.
It is a tough gig.

But coming from you I understand that it's a real work and I'm grateful to you for makink me understand it. Warhol made compils and it's a act of art in many others artists' works. sorry for my bad frenglish, hope it' understandable....lol !

Bhowani - you're right, there are too many cheap and nasty compilations. That's why the good ones stand out and I think this is one of those.

Yeeha!!
DisGUSting!
Which is nouveau argot for "very nice, cock".
Funny just thinking the other day about Negrocan - nice South London bunch of expatriates (mostly)
Andy Lafone - Agentinian bass-player (oops... maybe Venezuelan) - lovely geezer - you should make his acquaintance - it's his band - he is one of the folks I miss dearly now I am glued to the west-coast in my dotage - check him out in person if you ever get the chance - and give him my fondest
Thanks much for Vol 2

You won't be surprised to learn that I already have Vol 2, Gus, but thanks for posting here anyway.

Lazz, I have a blog devoted to my vinyl collection (Jazzjet's Vinyl Lab) and there's a fair amount of exotica there, alongside the jazz etc. If you're interested in joining just send me an email : jazzjet77@gmail.com.
