My rip, a truly lovely album...
"Real Rio samba sounds like this: fine small groups, seemingly a bunch of friends in a corner bar, mostly with the little cavaquinho guitar well to the fore, as well as (of course) the usual jubilant percussion. Some of the bands heard on Brazil -- Roots -- Samba sound professional, some semi-professional, but they're all pretty close to the street. Ten minutes of this stuff would be preferable to an hour of the trendies anytime." AMG

Perfect pagode.
Funny - most of the stuff my ears naturally gravitated towards when I was a kid in the '50s seems to have been from New Orleans.
And with samba, most of the sounds which seduced me seem to have been one way or another associated with Portela.
What can it all mean?
Pleasure, I suspect.
Thanks, KC
Como sempre, muito obrigado, O Senhor Rei. A great post! I always welcome more Brazilian music in my collection and am thrilled to see selections being posted here.
Now this looks very tasty....Thanks a bunch kc!
I'm downloading this again just to check if I misplaced those last three tracks.
Great stuff.
Something recently discovered is that the essential motivic "feel" of Chorinho is identified as "balanca". Which suggests to me that this #1 track title - "Weigh-Scale" - which is what the Brasilian words actually mean - not quite the pedestrian literalism of "weight in the balance" - it might also become a metaphor for some special quality of rhythmic expression - one as elusively unspecifiable as the "swing" in jazz.
Not that I know for sure - but a play of meanings is to be expected with Cariocas - so it might be the case.
Conjecture only. Have to make sense of the lyrics to figure out, I suppose.
Feilimid?
Legal! Muito obrigado.
Thank you, KC!
Mainly for puttin' on the spot our great samba composers.
Track 19 is so beautiful!
